Highlights.
Education for Ecuador is a nonprofit incentive composed of a small group of Ecuadorians and Expats committed to assisting underfunded schools in rural Ecuadorian villages. Our goal is to be in partnership with local teachers and administrators by helping them evaluate their current needs, raising funds for essential classroom supplies, and assisting in developing programs that will aid students in discerning a path for their future. Our mission is to help remove barriers to education so that students can acquire the skills and vision that will open paths to future success. Education for Ecuador currently has three main projects.
Education for the Visually Impaired
Cotacachi has a number of blind or severely sight-impaired children who need special assistance that will enable them to go to school and develop essential life skills. Education for Ecuador has contracted with a blind tutor to work with these students one day a week, teaching them braille, computer use, and other skills to help them become independent.
Technical Education/Carpentry
In partnership with the rural community of San Pedro and the Principal and teachers of Unidad Educativa Bilingüe Nazacota Puento, in the mountains near Cotacachi, we have established a program to teach students basic carpentry skills. The leaders of the school and the community have a long-range vision for developing a technical school that would provide students with the opportunity to learn trade skills useful to them after graduation.
La Querencia Community Library
In Punge, a small community near Cotacachi, Education for Ecuador is working to develop La Querencia Community Library with over 6,000 books in four languages. The goal is to encourage reading, to establish community connection, and to foster literacy. In addition, a local artist has committed to offering art classes, and there may be possibilities in the future for student internships in library science and education—and perhaps even a bookmobile to take the library to surrounding communities.
