Wichana Foundation October 2024 Newsletter

Wichana Foundation Team Members

The Wichana Foundation celebrates its fifth anniversary with impactful initiatives that continue to strengthen the health, culture, and education of indigenous communities in Ecuador. Key milestones include welcoming Dr. Silvia Tixicuro, a leading Kichwa physician, to the board, where half of the members are indigenous Kichwa women. Wichana has also launched a new cultural grant program, funding six community projects, including solstice celebrations, traditional music workshops, and a public-art mural, to preserve and promote Kichwa heritage.

This year, Wichana’s medical brigades brought free healthcare and ancestral medicine to over 130 people in the remote Kichwa community of Piñan, distributing essential water filters and hosting arts workshops for schoolchildren. The foundation’s new office in Cotacachi supports local Kichwa artisans through exhibitions, sales, and public demonstrations of their work, while young volunteers bring fresh energy and ideas to the team. Expanding its reach, Wichana is also collaborating with the Kichwa diaspora in the U.S., co-curating exhibitions and workshops celebrating indigenous elders in New York. Supporters are invited to sustain these initiatives through monthly donations or by visiting Wichana’s projects online.
