SIONA
COMMUNITY
OF CUYABENO.
Project
Highlights.
Through periodic medical brigades, our Foundation provides medical and dental care to the Siona indigenous people who live in this isolated Amazon region of Ecuador. Wichana has expanded our brigade work and has brought our medical/dental team to the Piñan, El Cercado and Colimbuela communities.
Project
Impact.
The Siona people are an indigenous community living in the Ecuadorian Amazon and Putumayo Department of Colombia. Today, there may be fewer than 500 Siona people on the planet! Most Ecuadorian Siona live in the remote Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the Amazonian province of Sucumbios.
Our Wichana Foundation medical trips in November 2021, March 2022, November 2022, August 2023 and March 2024 to assist the Siona people in the Cuyabeno area of the rainforest were very successful. Our team includes a physical therapist, a portable dental unit and skin cancer detection. We also provide small water filtration systems to help reduce the widespread intestinal parasites problem in the Cuyabeno communities. We generally see between 100 - 125 individuals during our visits.
Our brigades to various Kichwa communities in the Cotacachi area have brought free medical and dental care, and medicine, to dozens of individuals in each community who might otherwise not receive treatment.

COMMITTEE.
Our Board Members are integral to the success of the Wichana Foundation, bringing diverse skills and perspectives that shape our strategies and initiatives. Each member is committed to our mission and plays a vital role in governance, ensuring transparency, and fostering community involvement. Through collaborative efforts, they guide our programs and represent the interests of the communities we serve.
Our Women's Advisory Committee provides us with guidance from the outstanding women leaders of our partner projects. The members provide one another with mutual support, project analyses, program development, and fundraising tools. WAC's guidance for the foundation is vital to our success because it is rooted in its members' intimate knowledge of the needs of the families and communities where they live as well as serve through their community service projects.
