Wichana Foundation January 2025 Newsletter

The Wichana Foundation’s January 2025 Newsletter spotlights new and ongoing projects that improve health outcomes, celebrate cultural heritage, and enhance educational opportunities in indigenous communities across Ecuador. Notable initiatives include expanding the “Helping Babies Breathe in the Andes” program through K’allam’p/Kinray Hub, which trains indigenous midwives, doctors, and nurses to save newborns within the critical “Golden Minute” of life. The Foundation also prepares for its sixth medical/dental brigade to the Amazonian Siona communities of Cuyabeno, further strengthening sustainable health interventions. In addition, Wichana has submitted grant applications for the Spirit of the Andes film project—documenting Kichwa festivals and cultural practices—and a collaboration with the Sapiyay Collective to empower Indigenous Latinx youth through research, mentorship, and art-based workshops.
By prioritizing community-led efforts, the Wichana Foundation continues its mission to support the health, culture, and education of Ecuador’s indigenous peoples while fostering indigenous leadership and resilience. From preserving spiritual traditions through audiovisual media to enhancing maternal and newborn care in under-resourced hospitals, these forward-thinking 2025 initiatives reflect Wichana’s commitment to transformative, locally driven change. This holistic approach, along with opportunities for monthly donations, ensures that every project remains firmly rooted in community empowerment and sustainable impact.
